Blinded by our privileges, hurt by our labels; exploring implicit biases and how they influence our interactions
In our first session on Diversity and Inclusion, we will do two group activities. The first will explore what implicit bias means, and the second will explore the labels that we feel hindered by. Together, we will explore the biases we hold against others, and feel are held against us, to build a discussion on implicit biases and cross-cultural dialogue. Good Scoop Sharon Gray Memorial fundraiser
In memory of UC Davis's postdoctoral researcher, Sharon Gray, her friends and the Davis Soroptimists are co-hosting an event at the Good Scoop. Proceeds from the ice cream sales will be donated to Sharon's memorial fund, which will provide small training grants to women in science! Eat ice cream and donate to a great cause!

In the second session, we will explore the meanings of cross cultural dialogue and building spaces that are empathetic towards people of all backgrounds, with our very special guest Lee Bitsoi. Lee Bitsoi is the director of the Office of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Rush University in Chicago. Lee’s research as a bioethicist centers on implications of genetic/genomic research within Native American communities, and connections between historial trauma and epigenetics. Removing unconscious biases when making hiring decisions
Our last session will focus on the decisions we make when hiring candidates, with another special guest Kate Glazebrook. Kate Glazebrook is a principle adviser at the Behavioral Insights Team, a UK government institution dedicated to the application of behavioral sciences. Kate is also the co-founder of Applied, a service that incorporates leading behavioral science research to help organizations remove unconscious bias from hiring practices to practice better and fairer recruitment practices.
